What is Inflammation & How Do I Know If I Have It?

Writer's picture: Brad JohnsonBrad Johnson

Inflammation is a natural process in response to injury, infection, or exposure to harmful substances. It’s a protective response, helping to remove damaged or infected tissues and promote healing. However, when inflammation becomes chronic, it can lead to various health problems, including autoimmune disease, heart disease, and/or cancer. As a naturopathic doctor, I work with you to understand causes of your inflammation and to develop personalized treatment plans to help manage your condition.

Symptoms of inflammation really depend on the parts of the body being affected, as well as the severity of the inflammation. Acute inflammation, a normal response to injury or infection, often results in redness, swelling, heat and pain directly in the affected area. For example, if you sprain your ankle, it may become swollen, warm, and painful to the touch. This is a sign that your body is responding to the injury by increasing blood flow to the area and sending white blood cells to fight infection. Chronic inflammation can be more challenging to detect as it develops slowly and may not produce noticeable symptoms. However, common signs of chronic inflammation may include fatigue, joint pain, digestive issues, skin problems, and/or mood disorders. Chronic inflammation has also been linked to chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease. As a naturopathic doctor, my approach to managing inflammation involves identifying and addressing the root cause. Managing inflammation may mean many things and may include making dietary and/or lifestyle changes, incorporating natural supplements to replenish low levels, using herbal or homeopathic medicines to help support organ function, or helping you reduce stress to encourage the natural healing process. By taking an holistic approach to health, and focusing on the underlying causes of inflammation, I help you reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
